Eyes-off, hands-off driving on track for 2028, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ
“They're making so much progress on our goal to have eyes off, hands off in the '28 time frame”
Context: GM chair and CEO Mary Barra in an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer (Mad Money), 12 Oct 2026, reaffirming the target GM announced at its GM Forward event on 22 Oct 2025, where GM "announced plans to bring eyes-off driving to market in 2028, debuting on the" Cadillac Escalade IQ (GM newsroom). The system is meant to let drivers take their eyes off the road under certain conditions, starting on highways (TechCrunch, 2025), unlike today's hands-free, eyes-on Super Cruise. Quartz and Yonhap Infomax reported the reaffirmation.
How we judge it
Our interpretation: kept if by 31 Dec 2028 GM makes an eyes-off driving system (one that lets the driver take their eyes off the road under defined conditions, i.e. SAE Level 3 or higher) available to retail customers on at least one production vehicle in at least one market, per GM or credible reporting; broken if no customer availability by that date.
