Over 80% of neocloud providers will cease independent operations by 2030
“By 2030, Gartner predicts that cost pressure and a lack of a differentiating business model will force over 80% of neocloud providers to cease independent operations.”
Context: Gartner press release "Gartner Says Over $3.5 Trillion of AI Infrastructure Spending Could Be Exposed to Impairment by the End of 2030" (Stamford, 14 Oct 2026), subheaded "By 2030, 80% of Neocloud Providers Are Expected to Cease Independent Operations". Gartner (senior director analyst Will Sommer) argues that AI revenue will not cover planned AI capital spending and that neoclouds, which must soon earn returns on AI-optimized IaaS, are the most exposed. Sommer told TechTarget: "ceasing independent operations may include acquisition, it may include partnerships, or it may include outright failure." In a Yonhap Infomax article published on 20 Oct 2026 (Seoul time), Gartner analyst John Lovelock said the forecast does not mean neoclouds will collectively go bankrupt, but that many will disappear through mergers, acquisitions and consolidation. How we judge it
Our interpretation: correct if Gartner's own or comparable analyst data covering 2030 show that more than 80% of neocloud providers (specialist GPU-as-a-service / AI-compute cloud providers, not the diversified hyperscalers) operating in 2026 have ceased independent operations by 31 Dec 2030, whether through acquisition, merger, absorption into a partner, or failure; wrong if such data show 80% or fewer have ceased independent operations. Gartner's own definition of "neocloud" is used where it gives one.
