A "real scientific breakthrough" in physics, biotech, chemistry or materials science because of AI within two to three years
“In the next two to three years, we're going to have a real scientific breakthrough: physics, biotech, chemistry, material science, because of AI. It's very, very, very possible”
Context: TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew in a dialogue at DBS Bank's inaugural Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore on Monday 12 Oct 2026. Reported verbatim by CNBC and The Straits Times (whose version begins "My view is that in the next two to three years"); CNA reported the same forecast in paraphrase. Chew added that if it happens, the question will be how to align the models.
How we judge it
Our interpretation: correct if between 12 Oct 2026 and 12 Oct 2029 (the outer bound of "two to three years") at least one discovery in physics, biology/biotech, chemistry or materials science is published that independent scientists broadly recognize as a major breakthrough and that is credited primarily to AI systems (for example a peer-reviewed result widely reported as an AI-driven breakthrough); a developer's own claim does not count on its own. Wrong if no such discovery is broadly recognized by that date. Chew hedged the forecast as "very, very, very possible"; no probability was given.
