Amazon intends to make its Trainium AI chips available outside AWS late in 2027
“With Trainium demand so strong, customers continue encouraging us to make it available outside of AWS. We intend to do so late in 2027.”
Context: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his prepared remarks on Amazon's third-quarter 2026 earnings call (29 Oct 2026). "It" is Trainium, Amazon's custom AI accelerator, which until now has been offered only inside AWS. Answering an analyst later on the call, he said Amazon believes it will have "a very significant business selling chips externally" and that it must balance external sales against keeping chips for AWS services such as EC2 and Bedrock. Wording from the StockAnalysis transcript of the call. Sources: (1) StockAnalysis transcript of the Q3 2026 call; (2) Benzinga, 30 Oct 2026 (same two sentences quoted); (3) CNBC, 29 Oct 2026 (plans to make Trainium available externally "late in 2027"); (4) Chosun Biz, 30 Oct 2026.
How we judge it
Our interpretation: kept if by 31 Dec 2027 Amazon makes Trainium chips (any generation) available to customers outside AWS, meaning customers can buy or lease Trainium chips or systems to run in data centers not operated by AWS, or use them through another company's cloud, as shown by an Amazon announcement, a named customer or partner, or credible reporting that external availability or shipments have begun. Trainium offered only through AWS services, or AWS-operated deployments, does not count; neither does a further announcement of future plans. Broken if no external availability by 31 Dec 2027.
