Mistral to release Mistral Large 4's open weights by the end of October 2026
“We will release the weights by the end of the month.”
Context: Mistral AI's blog post "Introducing Mistral Large 4" (6 Oct 2026), launching a public API preview of Mistral Large 4 ("le Chonk"), a 1-trillion-parameter natively multimodal model with 52 billion active parameters. The post also says "Weights drop end of this month" and that until then the model is being red-teamed with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners and state authorities. Reporting the same day gave 27 October as the planned date: VentureBeat ("publish the model weights on Oct. 27"), The Wall Street Journal ("plans to release its trained parameters on Oct. 27"), The Next Web ("weights due October 27") and DW ("will be made publicly available on October 27"). Our interpretation: kept if by 31 Oct 2026 Mistral AI makes the Mistral Large 4 model weights publicly downloadable (for example on Hugging Face or its own site), under an open or custom licence that any developer can accept; broken if no public weights are available by 31 Oct 2026. Access limited to vetted partners, red-teamers or authorities, or API-only access, does not count as release.
