Maia 300 AI chip to begin production deployments in 2027, as Maia scales to multi-gigawatt deployments
“Maia 300 will begin production deployments in 2027.”
Context: Official Microsoft Blog post by Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President, Cloud + AI, "Microsoft to expand Azure Maia system to multi-gigawatt deployments" (12 Oct 2026). The same post says: "We will scale our Azure Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027, making Maia the primary inference system for Microsoft products and services." Reuters (12 Oct) reported Microsoft plans to deploy potentially more than a million of the chips next year; CNBC, The Verge and GeekWire reported the 2027 production start. CNBC noted a Microsoft general manager declined to give a timeline for the multi-gigawatt target.
How we judge it
Our interpretation: kept if by 31 Dec 2027 Microsoft states, or credible reporting confirms, that Maia 300 systems are deployed in production and serving Microsoft products or services (e.g. Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Foundry, MAI models); broken if the first production deployment slips to 2028 or later or the chip is cancelled. The multi-gigawatt scale and "primary inference system" goals are context and are not required for kept.
