An automated "intern-level research assistant" by September 2026
“we think it is plausible that by September of next year, we have an intern-level AI research assistant”
Context: Sam Altman in OpenAI's livestream Q&A (28 Oct 2025), as quoted directly by Engadget (Sep 2026). OpenAI described these as goals that are the "core thrust of our research program". The 2028 "legitimate AI researcher" goal is a separate published claim.
How we judge it
Our interpretation: by 30 Sep 2026, OpenAI has, by its own account, a system it calls an automated research intern doing well-defined research tasks under supervision.

Evidence & grader’s note
- OpenAI, "Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI" (Sep 6, 2026): "we have now reached the goal … of having an automated research intern by September of this year"
- Engadget: OpenAI says it reached its goal of creating an automated research intern
OpenAI says it reached the goal "according to our measurements" (a system that carries out well-defined research tasks under human direction); the criteria ask for OpenAI's own account. OpenAI also notes agents "still require significant human steering". No independent verification.
