Terafab to reach volume chip production at its Gibbons Creek site around Q3 2028
“And our aspiration is to reach volume production around Q3 of ’28 at Terafab at Gibbons Creek, the main Terafab location.”
Context: Elon Musk on SpaceX's third-quarter 2026 earnings webcast (20 Oct 2026), in the same answer as the Austin test-chip target, about Terafab, the chip-fabrication project of SpaceX and Tesla. He went on: "Now these are very aggressive dates … Let's just say that outcome of achieving volume production is at least in a set of possible outcomes for Q3 or Q4 of '28." On Tesla's Q3 call the next day he said "our aspiration is to be making some kind of useful chip at volume around Q3 of 2028." How we judge it
Our interpretation: correct if by 30 Sep 2028 SpaceX, Tesla or Musk states, and credible reporting corroborates, that Terafab's main Gibbons Creek (Texas) site has begun volume production of chips, meaning regular production for use in products and not only test or pilot wafers. Wrong otherwise. Musk also named Q4 2028 as a possible outcome; under our grace window, volume production that starts in Q4 2028 would be graded Partly.
