Terafab's Austin research fab to make its first functional test chip around May or June 2027
“But what we’re aiming for internally is to make our first sort of test chip functional in approximately May or June of next year. That’s just a kind of SRAM chip, something that basically tests the line. That’s at the research fab in Austin.”
Context: Elon Musk on SpaceX's third-quarter 2026 earnings webcast (20 Oct 2026), answering Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas about Terafab, the chip-fabrication project of SpaceX and Tesla. Musk prefaced the timeline: "I'll tell you what our internal expectations are, which obviously I put big error bars on, because we don't know if we will actually achieve this or not." "Next year" is 2027. He repeated the target on Tesla's Q3 call the next day ("we'll make our first test chip just to see if we can make any chip at all around May or June"). How we judge it
Our interpretation: correct if by 30 Jun 2027 SpaceX, Tesla or Musk states, or credible reporting confirms, that the Terafab research fab in Austin has produced a functional test chip (such as the SRAM test chip Musk described). Wrong if no functional test chip from that fab has been reported by then. A chip made for Terafab by another foundry does not count.
