Amazon and X-energy aim to add more than 5 GW of new US nuclear capacity by 2039

Context: Amazon's "Amazon plans nearly 1 GW nuclear energy project in Indiana" (aboutamazon.com, 19 Oct 2026, by Josh Weissman, Vice President of Data Center Delivery at AWS), announcing an agreement with X-energy and American Electric Power to explore twelve Xe-100 small modular reactors (960 MW) in Sullivan County, Indiana. The post describes it as "the second project under Amazon and X-energy's collaboration that aims to add more than 5 gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear capacity to the U.S. grid by 2039" and the page summary calls it "Amazon's commitment to 5+ GW of carbon-free nuclear energy by 2039". The target dates from Amazon's October 2024 investment in X-energy (Bloomberg: "more than 5 gigawatts of new power projects coming online across the US by 2039"). No construction schedule was given for the Indiana plant (Utility Dive). How we judge it

Our interpretation: kept if by 31 Dec 2039 nuclear plants developed under the Amazon/X-energy collaboration have more than 5 GW of new generating capacity in commercial operation in the United States, per Amazon, X-energy, the plant operators or credible reporting; partly if at least 1 GW but not more than 5 GW is in commercial operation by then; broken if less than 1 GW is. Capacity that is only licensed or under construction does not count, nor do power purchase agreements with existing nuclear plants.
