Amazon expects to spend "meaningfully more" on capital expenditures in 2027 than its roughly $220 billion in 2026
“We still expect 2026 cash CapEx of approximately $220 billion, the majority for AWS, and expect to spend meaningfully more in 2027 with a clear line of sight to attractive financial returns, as I laid out on our last call.”
Context: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his prepared remarks on Amazon's third-quarter 2026 earnings call (29 Oct 2026). Amazon's Q3 2026 earnings release repeats the 2026 guidance ("We continue to expect 2026 cash capital expenditures to be approximately $220 billion"). Amazon measures cash capital expenditures as purchases of property and equipment, net of proceeds from sales and incentives (the figure used in its free-cash-flow reconciliation). Sources: (1) StockAnalysis transcript of the call; (2) Amazon Q3 2026 earnings release (2026 guidance); (3) CNBC, 29 Oct 2026 ("spend meaningfully more in 2027"); (4) Business Insider, 29 Oct 2026 ("to spend meaningfully more in 2027.").
How we judge it
Our interpretation: kept if Amazon's cash capital expenditures for calendar 2027 (purchases of property and equipment, net of proceeds from sales and incentives, as reported in its Q4/full-year 2027 results) are at least 10% higher than the same figure for calendar 2026 (guided at about $220 billion when this was said). Partly kept if 2027 is higher than 2026 but by less than 10%. Broken if 2027 is flat or lower. The 10% line is our reading of "meaningfully more".
